Anyone who thinks cardigans are only for senior citizens needs to think again. This buttoned or zippered style of sweater is a versatile and thoroughly modern addition to any man’s wardrobe. It’s a casual alternative to a sports jacket, providing a touch of sophistication when worn over either a dress shirt or t-shirt. The cardigan is a great way to add warmth during transitional weather in the spring and fall.
A cardigan can dress up or dress down an outfit. Popular yarn choices for dressier cardigans include lightweight wool, cashmere and silk. When wearing a cardigan with a dress shirt, a contrasting color (such as a navy cardigan with a white shirt) will make a strong statement. A cardigan worn with a striped dress shirt can pick up one of the colors of the stripes. For a sporty or more casual look, a cotton cardigan in a bright color is the perfect choice.
The most popular cardigan neckline style is currently the low-cut v-neck worn with an open shirt collar. If you’re wearing a cardigan with a dress shirt and tie you should go with a higher neckline. An additional factor to consider when deciding on the proper depth of the v-neck is that it should be in proportion to the height and body type of the wearer. Another neckline option for a cardigan sweater is the shawl collar, which consists of a folded-over band around the neck opening of the sweater. On the trendier side there are hooded cardigans that resemble hoodie sweatshirts.
Unlike pullover sweaters that can be tight or loose, a cardigan should fit well. Avoid chunky knits and heavy wools since they add unwanted bulk to the cardigan silhouette. Depending on its style and color, a cardigan can either blend in with other items in a wardrobe or stand out by making a bold statement.
