A dress shirt’s breast pocket is often included on the left hand side. In general it is added for its aesthetic value rather than for practical reasons and the majority of men don’t actually use it. It is believed that a breast pocket adds depth to the front of a dress shirt. Particularly, double breast pockets accentuate the chest which can make men perceived to be more attractive by the opposite sex.
Depending on the type of dress shirt different types of breast pockets or no breast pockets are used. A breast pocket is acceptable for office dress shirts whereas for formal wear, a dress shirt without a pocket is recommended as it delivers a cleaner and simpler look. Only the most casual shirts and Western shirts have double breast pockets.
The breast pockets vary mainly in the finishing of the bottom corners which can be rounded, square, corner cut, or pointed. Finally, the pocket may include a flap and feature pleating which will make the dress shirt more casual.
