It’s All Leather

Suits and dress shirts come in a variety of fabrics and colors, but when it comes to accessories leather is still the material of choice.  Spend as much money as you can afford on leather accessories and stick with classic styles – your investments will pay off for years to come.

Shoes

Shoes are arguably one of the most important items in a man’s wardrobe.  In addition to being purely functional, they speak volumes about a man’s personality and sense of style.  Although shoe styles change over the years, there are still a few guidelines to be followed.  Dress shoes should always be leather (don’t settle for anything less) and the color of your shoes should be darker than your pants.  When wearing a suit or dress pants, oxford shoes that lace up are always an appropriate choice.  Slip-on styles including loafers were once limited to casual wear but are being seen more and more with suits.

Belt

At the least, a well-dressed man should own black, brown and tan leather belts that approximately match the color and finish of his shoes.  Dress belts are traditionally no wider than the width or your thumb and usually have a polished finish.  Look for high-quality leather such as calfskin or if you want to make a statement try alligator, lizard or snakeskin.  The best type of buckle for a dress belt is small, simple and made of sterling silver, nickel or unpolished brass.

Wallet

A bulky wallet is a liability in more ways than one.  Besides causing an unsightly pocket bulge, a wallet that’s stuffed with credit cards and personal items can be difficult to replace if lost.  A sleek suit calls for a sleek leather wallet that holds a minimum number of items such as a driver’s license, two or three credit cards and some cash.  Leave the nylon tri-fold wallets for the younger guys and stick with a black leather bi-fold style.
