Good Posture: Why It Matters

A stylish wardrobe will go a long way towards making you look good, but you must stand tall if you want to convey a sense of confidence. We’re not talking about your actual height – we’re talking about using good posture to appear as tall and slim as possible. Besides the psychological edge that good posture can give you, it also has plenty of health benefits.

Having good posture means that your ears, shoulders, hips, knees and ankles are vertically aligned in a single straight line. To see what this feels like, stand with your back against a wall and the back of your head and shoulders touching the wall. Place your heels about 6 inches away from the wall. Draw in your lower abs to decrease any arch in your lower back and then step away from the wall. This is what alignment feels like. You should aim for this feeling of alignment whenever you’re standing or walking. You can check your posture in the mirror to make sure your shoulders aren’t sagging and your head is held up straight.

Adopting good posture can reduce tension in the upper body, especially in the neck and shoulders. Standing straight also improves organ function by lessening the pressure of the rib cage on internal organs. Combined with a healthy diet and good exercise routine, it can reduce the chances of developing back problems or a paunch later in life.

In addition to these health benefits, good posture will make you look more at ease and more open in any social situation. When you’re wearing a suit, standing straight with your shoulders pulled back will create a powerful silhouette that conveys strength. That wardrobe that you’ve invested time and money in will fit better and turn you into a much more confident version of yourself.
